Why Security Leaders Are Opting for Consulting Gigs

As a chief information security officer (CISO), I've watched our profession transform from purely technical authorities to key business leaders. Burnout has always been a concern stemming from the growing number of data breaches and the accelerating technical transformation occurring in many businesses. But the job is getting considerably harder due to increased regulatory complexity and a rise in culture of transparency and accountability — and the pressure isn't letting up.

Over the past few years, we've seen two CISOs held personally accountable for activities under their watch. Former Uber CISO Joseph Sullivan was accused of covering up a data breach and convicted of two federal charges in 2022. The following year, the SEC charged SolarWinds CISO Timothy Brown with fraud and other charges related to a 2020 supply chain attack that targeted software vulnerabilities. A federal judge last year threw out part of the charges but left a securities fraud claim intact.
